Hey everyone! Man, it seems like it’s been forever since I’ve put up a picture. Amazing how a holiday weekend gets in the way of everything. And on top of that, today’s post sucks. Very little substance, not much to read. Sigh, oh well, they can’t all be super fantastic, right?

Wow, I just realized it’s been quite awhile since I’ve posted a picture from Colorado. It’s sad that I don’t live there anymore, and thus don’t have a steady drip of new pics from the area coming in, but still.
You’re looking at Hahn’s Peak, which is a little ways outside of Steamboat Springs. I was in the area a couple years ago for my wife’s family reuinion, so I got pretty familiar with the view up at this guy, since it pretty much dominates the valley where we were staying. This particular shot was taken from right near the trailhead that takes you up to the top, to that little fire lookout that you can see there. In a nice dose of typical Colorado late-summer weather, it was almost perfectly clear when we started our hike, but a few thunderstorms rolled in soon after we got down off the top. I guess it’s good that we weren’t running any later than we were, you definitely don’t want to be exposed out of the trees during an electrical storm…
In other news, I keep mentioning how disappointed I was in my Tamron 28-300 VC, but yet I keep posting pics from that lens. You may be wondering why that is. I mean, I certainly am. The reality is, that was the only lens I used for basically an entire year, and the non-VC version of that lens was my primary lens for essentially another year before that. So, all of the pictures I took from that timeframe used it. So while it’s true that the quality of most of those pics isn’t quite what I’d like, that’s the only pics I’ve got from then. Also, I’m still in the midst of really going through all of the pictures from then and doing whatever processing I’m going to do. (It’s tough to power through it when so many of the pics that I thought would be fantastic just aren’t because of my equipment, so I end up putting it off, A LOT.) So, even though this is a two year old picture from a lens I didn’t like, I just recently got around to digging it out of the pile. And there are plenty more where this one came from. So I’m sure you’ll continue to see them from time to time. Get comfortable.

Hey guys. Quick (and late) post today. This is some kind of yellow flower that I found in the Washington Park Arboretum here in Seattle awhile ago. Not much else to say about it really. So, I’ll stop there.

Hey everyone! I realize I was kind of poopy this week and only managed to post two pictures. Bah, whatever, reading my blog is a privilege, not a right! That, and yes, I am lame. Maybe next week will be better? Hmm, we’ll see. Probably not Monday, as I’ll be out of town. But maybe Tuesday will be AWESOME. Yes, perhaps. Tuesday has the potential to be AWESOME. It also has the potential to be a lot of other things, as it turns out.
Today’s pic takes us back to Galena Summit in Idaho. It’s a little ways north of Sun Valley, sort of right smack in the middle of the state. The name is a bit weird, ending in the word “summit”, rather than “pass”. But hey, those Idahoans are wacky, they do things their own way. Whatever.
I’ve got to run to catch a plane now, that’s all you get.

June 2, 2010 – Chikamin Peak and Gold Creek

Hey folks. Hope you all enjoyed the long weekend, if you live in a place where this last weekend was a long one. This is a picture of Chikamin Peak and Gold Creek. It’s right near Snoqualmie Pass in Washington State. Right on the other side of that row of trees is Gold Creek Pond. There’s a nice little path around the pond, and a cute little picnic area. The story behind it is that, when they were building the interstate (which was not too far behind me), what is now Gold Creek Pond was a huge gravel pit. When construction was complete, they turned it into the cute little picnic area that it is now. How nice of them.
That all being said, I would like this picture a lot more if that little bushy thing at the bottom of the frame wasn’t there. Sigh.

I’m not sure exactly how I feel about pictures like this. I mean, don’t get me wrong, animal pictures are cool and everything. But when you take them at the zoo across the street, they just feel.. somehow less authentic. Like, if you take a picture of some bird that’s in a cage, and then go around saying how awesome you are for getting a picture of that bird, it kind of discounts all the effort *real* bird photographers spend trying to get pictures of birds that are actually outside in the wild. (And believe me, those guys (and girls) don’t eff around. My understanding is that it’s an all-day ordeal tracking those suckers down. And you need some wicked telephoto lenses and such. Once you know even a little bit about those folks do to satisfy their particular obsession, it makes pictures of birds quite a bit more impressive. In my opinion anyway.
Anyway, whatever. It’s a tortoise. And it was a few feet away from me. Because I was at the zoo, standing right next to a couple children who thought I looked funny taking a picture of a tortoise.

Mt. Shuksan, seen from Yellow Aster Butte. It’s worth noting that Yellow Aster Butte is not actually yellow. “But,” you might say, “the name doesn’t reference the Aster Butte that is Yellow, it is instead the Butte of Yellow Aster!”. And it’s true, there is some yellow stuff out there. But is that aster? I don’t know. I just don’t know.

Another day when I don’t have time to do a “real” post, so instead I’m just tossing up a picture so you know I didn’t forget about you. It’s an iguana! From the zoo across the street! From the much-maligned Tamron 28-300 VC lens! This is a (rare) case where I’m not sure I could have gotten this shot without it, since this was a 1/40s handheld exposure. The image stabilization actually worked out for me this time, sweet.
I was HOPING I’d have a chance today to talk about the two newest toys I ordered for my camera earlier this week, but no. They’re both for macro stuff, so hopefully not only will you get a chance to read about them someday, you’ll also get to see the results of them somewhat soon. We’ll see. Hopefully tomorrow I’ll be able to talk about them? At least one of them should be getting here tomorrow, so that’ll be cool. Okay, that’s all the time I’ve got for today..

And here we go again, right back to the equipment that I keep complaining about. This image (and a bunch of others that are a lot like it) are the result of me slowly working my way through a huge backlog (almost 2 years!) of images that I took, but never properly went through to extract the decent ones. The period of time I’m working through right now (July 2008) was very soon after I acquired my Tamron 28-300 VC lens (the VC is Tamron’s image stabilization technology), which replaced the very similar Tamron 28-300 non-VC lens that I had previously been using for a year or so. Apparently I hadn’t learned my lesson at the time, which is unfortunate. A big part of the reason I never went through these images is because the raw result coming off the camera is just usually not that inspiring, so I was never excited to go through them. (In fact, the experience of going through them, far from being “exciting”, could probably better be described by the term “soul-crushing”.) They’re almost never sharp, and the colors tend to be more blah than wow. If you force yourself to sit through it though, and you’re not afraid to be heavy-handed with the post processing, you can definitely save some of them. They won’t sit at the very top of your favorite images list, but they can be solid players.
Right, so, about this picture. This is the view from Galena Summit, which is a pass in central-ish Idaho, a little ways north of Sun Valley. It actually sits between Sun Valley and the Sawtooth Valley, which I posted a (mediocre) picture of several weeks ago. Not surprisingly, I took both of them on the same afternoon. I was taking the scenic route to get from Seattle to Colorado, so I took the opportunity to cut south through the Bitterroot Valley in Montana, and then through the Sawtooth Valley in Idaho. I’m using the word “valley” a lot today. Unavoidable, really. I headed east out of the Seattle valley, along the I-90 valley, to Missoula. Valley. Then I struck south, through the valleys I already mentioned. After I took this picture, I drove through Sun Valley, through Craters of the Moon National Monument (almost used a picture from there today), and I spent the night in the car right on the Idaho-Wyoming border. Let’s see.. other random facts.. Wikipedia says Galena Summit has an elevation of 8,701 feet. It also has a funny name. It’s not called “Galena Pass” like I thought. I thought it was “the summit of Galena Pass”, but no, it’s “Galena Summit”. That’s all I got for today.

Man, I’m getting my posts out late this week. Almost missed business hours again. Please ignore that last sentence if you happen to work with me. Of course I’m writing these up at night, at home, outside of the time when you’re paying me to do other stuff. Right? Awkward silence.
I can’t remember if I’ve posted something similar to this one already or not. I could easily go back and check, but I’m going to assume that either I haven’t, or it’s been long enough that you don’t remember either. I have a whole bunch that are pretty similar but yet different enough to be (in my mind anyway) still worth posting, so I figure I may as well bang one out here so that the next time that I’m sitting here wondering what possible picture I should use, I can just grab the next one from the list.
This is Mt. Baker, seen from about halfway (or maybe two thirds of the way) up the Yellow Aster Butte trail. It’s near the western edge of North Cascades National Park, but not actually in it. Actually, the trailhead is up the highway that takes you to the Mt. Baker Ski Area, and not really anywhere else. It’s a fantastic trail, well worth the time, especially in the early fall when all the trees further down haven’t quite started changing yet. All the little scrubby grasses and bushes up higher have a really nice display of color (none of which is displayed here of course), definitely worth checking out on a nice day. And there are some nice mountain backdrops too if that’s your thing. Unfortunately, most of the cool mountains other than Baker and Shuksan didn’t come out too well in my pictures from my hike that day, because I had crappy equipment.
Right, my crappy equipment. For all the times that I mention how bad that Tamron 28-300 mm VC lens is, I sure seem to be posting a lot of pictures from it lately, huh? There’s a number of reasons for that I guess.. The main one being that, for a couple years it was *the lens* that I would use, so all of these cool places I went were documented in no other way. Also, I still haven’t gotten around to properly going through all the pictures I’ve taken with the equipment I’ve picked up to replace it, so these are just the shots I’ve got available. Whatever, the point is (I guess), that even with crappy equipment, you can get nice pictures. It’s just that it’s a lot easier to get nice pictures with good equipment, and there are things that you can get nice pictures of with good equipment that are harder to get nice pictures of without. So for the love of god get yourself some good equipment. Although, hold off a bit, because Monday I’ll probably post something from a point and shoot and talk about how you can get cool pictures from any camera, so don’t let the fact that all you have is a point and shoot hold you back. But in the context of just today’s post, I’ll assume that my message is totally consistent and I’ll speak with a tone that suggests I totally know what I’m talking about. And I’ll say “hey, do it this way and you’ll have awesome pictures and yay!” Yeah man, alright.

So I kind of ran out of time to post something today, but rather than just leave you all hanging until tomorrow (so soon after ignoring you all for two weeks) I ended up just grabbing this shot out of the archives. It’s just some flowers that I walked by one day when I was at the zoo in Seattle. I liked the colors, that’s all. No clue what kind of flowers they are, but that’s not unusual.
As for tomorrow, I can’t decide if I should post another shot from my recent trip, or if I should try to space those out a bit so that I don’t overwhelm anyone. Hmmm, I’ll sleep on it, and let you know tomorrow.
UPDATE: I figured out what these are: Camas Lilies!
