Hey, lookie here, this is the 5th post this week! I actually did it – I actually posted one picture here per day on, umm, the picture of the day. I think I deserve a pretty serious pat on the back for that one. Also, I’ll probably over-compensate now by not posting anything else for a month and a half. Hmm.
These are lupine flowers. You see them a bunch up in the mountains here in Washington. That’s an ant. You see them a bunch just about everywhere in the world I’ve ever been. Okay, that’s all I’ve got.

Man, I still haven’t gotten out to take a picture in just about forever now. The motivation just isn’t there, and on top of that the weather has been pretty much crap for as long as I can remember. So, I’m still just tossing out pics from the archive, random stuff from years past. Here’s one from near Steamboat Springs, Colorado, from the trail that goes to the top of Hahn’s Peak. Some nice yellow flowers I guess, as the trail approached treeline. A reasonable trail, if you find yourself in the area. If not, well, I guess you’ll just have to find another trail to hike.

Let’s go with this one today. It’s (yet another) bee with (yet another) flower. But it’s Wednesday, and this makes me 3 for 3. I think these are lavender flowers or something? Hmm, whatever, not important. They’re nice enough to look at.

So, today’s post wraps up the month of April. Another month, come and gone. Man, I should have something poignant to say about that.
This is (I think, although I haven’t verified) the last weekend of this year’s Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. they bloomed late this year, so I’m sure it’ll be fantastic up there. (And, the tulips will probably last past this weekend, but I don’t know what the deal is after the festival officially ends.) I was up there earlier this month, right after they started blooming. As you can see, a lot of them hadn’t opened up all the way yet (and there were a lot of steps that were still totally green.) So, I think I’d recommend heading up there later in the bloom cycle (like, say, *now*) as opposed to hitting it at the beginning. But, take what you can get I guess. The weather’s looking good this weekend though, so if you haven’t made it out there yet, just freakin’ go!

Hey everyone! It’s tulip time here in the northwest, so in a rare break from my usual behavior, I’m actually going to post a picture here to the blog that was actually taken in the last 24 hours. Crazy, right? Totally.
So, as you’ve probably guessed by the title of the post, this was taken at the 2011 Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. I can’t tell you exactly where I was at the time, because I was just walking around some random field of tulips that was off the side of the road. But it’s tough to go wrong once you get up there – just find some flowers and go look at them.
Sadly, this was about the only good picture I got this year. I’m not sure why, but I have a few theories. First, I just wasn’t really in that much of a picture-taking mood this year. So, I snapped a few, but my heart just wasn’t in it. Then of course there was the problem of this freaking annoying cloud that was just hovering right there between me and the sun for most of the time I was there. It wasn’t blowing by like most clouds should, it kept billowing around and reforming right where it was the most inconvenient. So about two thirds of the time I was there the light stunk. Probably the biggest problem was that I didn’t really think through ahead of time what kinds of shots I would want to try to get. I did that last year, and correspondingly I got a lot of shots I was happy with. This year, I of course fell back on some of the same ideas I used last year, but since I already got them last year, I didn’t really try at all this year, and thus the ones I did get were junk. So, umm, whoops.
I still totally recommend that you go check it out yourself – especially if you’re a photographer. As I’ve mentioned in the past, there are TONS of great themes you can play around with. But, it’s definitely worth the time to do some planning. I realize that may be tough if you’ve never been there before and don’t know how things are laid out, but it’s still worth doing. Just sort of make a mental checklist of things you want to play around with, different ways of putting all the elements together. Some of the primary themes are of course the expansive fields of color, all made up by mostly-repeating (but all subtly different) patterns and flower-shapes, the orderly rows of flower beds, the contrasts between plots of different types of tulips, and of course the external elements (like barns, mountains, trees, and clouds). But beyond that, there’s lots of things you can do, lots of different lines and colors and elements to work with. It’s can be a great time.
Unless you’re lazy, like I was this year. Then it’s just meh. But, do go check it out. And plan on traffic being a bit annoying. And plan on paying 5 bucks to park each time you stop. Plan on hitting a few different fields, to get different combinations of colors. And, definitely plan on seeing plenty of people, and having to be creative to keep them out of your pictures. If you go into the experience planning for those things, you’ll have a much better time when you’re there. (Oh, and head north to Highway 20 on the way out, otherwise you’ll be hating your life.)

Don’t worry, I’ll inundate you guys soon with a bunch of Hawaii pictures, it’s definitely coming. In the meantime though, I’m just going to toss out a few more shots from the archive. Like this one. And no, this one isn’t from this year. I haven’t yet started going outside to take bug pictures this year, I think it’s still a bit too cold for them (the bugs, not the pictures), and besides, the flowers haven’t really started blooming yet. (Although some of the trees have…)
Obviously, I used a flash in this picture. The fact that it’s so obvious is actually one thing I don’t really like about it. The bee’s “skin” was just too reflective, so I got that crazy shine. I mean, in some ways it’s neat, because you can really see all the little grains of pollen stuck to his head, but using artificial light like that almost feels like cheating. Oh well, I’m sure I’ll get over it.
In other news, I believe the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival has started. Meaning, I’m pretty sure it officially goes from basically the beginning of to the end of April. I haven’t actually put any effort in to see if any tulips are actually blooming yet (although there are some daffodils blooming locally, so those are probably in full effect up there), but it’s probably time to start looking for a nice weekend day to head up there. If you’re a photographer, and you’re at least somewhat in the area (BC counts!) it’s totally worth checking out, you can have a lot of fun playing around with lots of different theme ideas. I’m tentatively planning on making it up there sooner or later, so maybe I’ll see you up there?

Hey everybody! It’s been awhile since I’ve put anything up here (I’ve been busy!), so here’s a quick shot of some flowers to tide you over.
These are from the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival near Mt. Vernon, in Washington State. It’ll be coming up in here in a month or two, so, umm, dot dot dot.

Hey! Guess what! Here’s a hint: it says in the title. Yeah, this is the 300th Picture of the Day! (Or is it the Picture of the 300th Day?) Woooooooo!!! Crazy, right?? This blog has been going for just under 18 months now. I honestly didn’t think I’d still be sticking with it for this long. But, here we are, for whatever that’s worth.
Since you all stuck with me this far, I’ll go ahead and make a promise to continue posting the most awesome pictures you’ve ever seen paired with hilarious commentary at least until we get to post number 600. Those will be on my other blog, but I’ll keep posting stuff here too, just so you guys don’t feel left out.

Turns out, it’s been awhile since I posted a flower picture. A travesty, right?? I mean, I guess I posted that one of the ant crawling around on the buds about a week ago, but other than that I’ve only posted one this whole month! So, here’s one that I took really soon after getting my first digital SLR awhile back. I (obviously) don’t know what kind of flowers these are, and this time I’m not even going to take the usual step of calling them daisies. They are totally NOT daisies. They might even be some kind of weed, I’m not sure. Although, that brings up another point: that I don’t even really know what the real definition of a weed is. I mean, if it’s got pretty flowers, why is it a problem? (Like, I’m starting to realize that poppies might be weeds, but poppies are really pretty! And orange. They are pretty and orange. That’s not typical weed behavior in my opinion.)
Regardless, this is a picture. A picture of some flowers. Some flowers that might be weeds. Want to know some other trivia about this picture? I took this picture before my wedding. As in, I was sitting around my house, just sort of farting around. I guess I didn’t have much else going on that day. So I went outside and took some pictures of flowers. And then I put my clothes on, and headed over to my wedding. True story.

Okay, today’s post will actually be a quick post, unlike yesterday, where I said it would be a quick post, but then I proceeded to include 3 chapters from my upcoming memoirs.
Took this one a couple years ago (yes, with my crappy lens), at Galena Summit, in Idaho. I’ve posted other pics from that day here before, perhaps one or two that are almost identical to this one. I actually didn’t even do my homework, I didn’t go back to check which ones I’ve posted from here before, all I can say is that I haven’t yet posted this exact image. To my knowledge, I have yet to re-post a single picture. I’ve posted very similar pictures, and I’ll continue to post pictures that are even more similar to each other. But I’m going to hold off from actually using the exact same image a second time as long as I can (but believe me, it’s coming eventually, the number of days in the future is greater than the number of unique pictures I have now plus the images I will take between now and the future. So, umm, do the math…)

Hey everyone! Happy Tuesday! Except that, umm, it’s Wednesday. Yesterday sort of didn’t really happen, at least as far as this blog is concerned. Whatever, get over it. It’s Wednesday! That’s awesome! And you get a bug picture today! Yesss!
There’s not many bugs up here in Seattle. At least, not in my neighborhood. There’s one kind of spider, and there are bees. So, that’s what I get pictures of when I go out to get bug pictures. Really, I should take some field trips to the woods specifically for bug pictures. Maybe I’ll do that at some point, and actually see some different bugs. Actually, that’s really not a bad idea. But it hasn’t happened yet. Well, it happened once, I went to Carkeek Park and actualy found some different bugs. But I mean I should do it again. As far as the flower, I keep calling these things orange daisies, but I actually don’t know if that’s what they actually are. They have a whole bunch of them planted right at the entrance to the south parking lot at the zoo here in Seattle, so I take a lot of pictures of them. Because they’re pretty. And I like to take pictures of pretty things. That’s the way this blog works.
Also, it seems like having a claw sticking out from right next to your eyeball could be useful. I’m not sure for what, but I’m sure you could figure out something to do with it. It’d be a bit creepy, sure, but man, that’d be handy for reading the newspaper and stuff. Or if you had a pair of broken sunglasses, you could totally still use them.
In other news… It’s been awhile since I’ve talked about it, so I’m going to go ahead and give another plug for Flattr.com. Flattr is based on a really cool idea: you pay a couple bucks every month, and then when you see a website or article or something you enjoy or find useful, you click the Flattr button (that looks like the one below). Basically, it’s like a Facebook Like button, except that, at the end of the month, everybody you Flattred that month gets an equal cut of your couple bucks. (Or, it all goes to charity if you don’t find anything you like in a given month..) It’s nice because it’s only a couple bucks, and it makes a big difference to small- and mid-size blogs and such that aren’t big enough to make any money from advertising (or, alternatively, don’t want to bother their readers with advertising. Hi! I’m Dave!) I’ve been doing it for a couple months now, and it’s very cool. The biggest problem I’ve found so far is that the number of websites that have Flattr buttons is still pretty small, so it can be difficult to find things to Flattr. So, if you have a site or a blog, you should absolutely sign up, and let me know! Okay, plug over, that’s the last you’ll hear about it for awhile (other than the boilerplate stuff at the bottom of every post and on the sidebar, but, whatever.)
