Lake Serene

Lake Serene

June 12, 2009

Another picture from a hike this spring. You’re looking at Lake Serene, which is in the shadow (literally) of Mt. Index, along Highway 2 in Washington State. The setting for the lake is truly awe-inspiring, it’s surrounded by HUGE vertical cliffs and rocky ridgelines. And, it’s fairly low-elevation, so the snow clears out relatively early. (Although not early enough, as it turns out. This little spot was the only bit of the entire lake that wasn’t still snow-covered.)

Also, I timed my hike wrong. In general, midday light sucks for taking landscape-y photos. It tends to wash out all the colors, and minimizes shadows, which can be used for contrast and dramatic effect. Pictures early in the morning or late in the afternoon tend to be better. Or, rather, it tends to be easier (for me, anyway) to get a picture that I feel is “good” at those times, than it is in the middle of the day. So, I’ve gotten into the habit lately of starting my hikes late, such that I’ll be at the part that I’m expecting to be interesting late in the afternoon, so I don’t have to sit there for a few hours waiting for the nice light.

Unfortunately, Lake Serene is situated such that by mid-afternoon, it’s completely in the shade, being on the northeast flank of Mt. Index. So I played around with what I could, but most of the lake didn’t really make for a great picture. (I mean, the pictures are still interesting, for instance if you just want to see what the hike was like. But as far as hang-on-your-wall kind of pictures, there wasn’t much there that day.)

So as I mentioned before, this little spot of the lake was snow free, so I played around for awhile with the reflection of the ridge and sky, contrasted against the smooth texture of the driftwood. There were a few views that I thought were pretty cool, but this ended up being the one I snagged to use here.

That’s it for this week. Have fun this weekend.
