Hey everyone! I’m going to start a new weekly feature here at Dave’s Picture of the Day. Every Thursday, I’m going to post a picture that’s totally, absolutely, horrendously mediocre. This is of course different from every other day because on Thursdays I’ll actually be calling them out as such. Exciting! I’ve got a ton of images that are mostly okay, as in they’re mostly in focus and such, but they just… don’t quite do it for me. They just aren’t quite interesting enough, or whatever.
So, today we’re going to kick it all off with this one! This was taken along Gold Camp Road, which is a dirt road that takes you from Colorado Springs out to Cripple Creek. Or, the other way around, if that’s your thing. There’s of course also a highway route that’s longer but much faster, but that one is not included in today’s picture. Only one route at a time, that’s what I always say. Why does it get the dubious honor of being the first image selected for mediocre-image-Thursday? Meh, I dunno. It’s got some nice elements, the nice bright yellow tree, all the detail in it. But the tree is sort of awkwardly placed. And the background isn’t really that interesting. It’s not a total train-wreck though, it definitely reminds me of when I was there, which can be a useful thing, if you’re trying to help yourself remember when you were somewhere. But it doesn’t really do a good job of reminding *you* when I was there, because you weren’t there.

Man, I swear I was supposed to be born in the Alps. I would LOVE to live over in Europe (preferably either in northern Italy or southern Switzerland), but unfortunately I’m not the type that has the courage to make huge life changes like that. Sigh. I guess I’ll just keep dreaming.
This is yet another picture from Parco Nazionale Gran Paradiso (Gran Paradiso National Park), in the Aosta Valley, which is in the far northwestern corner of Italy. The valley is capped at the end by Mont Blanc (they call it Monte Bianco), and this is also the valley that has both St. Bernard Passes (both Grand St. Bernard Pass – where they breed the dogs – and Little St. Bernard Pass), which cross into Switzerland and France, respectively. At the time I was there, not only did I not have any kind of wide-angle lens, the widest I could get was 28mm, which is a travesty. I guess I just need to go back.
This was along the Alpe Money (moe-NAY) trail, which spits out of the village of Valnontey and follows the river up the valley. We only had just under a week to explore all of northern Italy, so the fact that we were able to spend two nights in the park and go hiking for a full day was pretty amazing in and of itself. Some day I’d love to just spend a whole bunch of time hiking and exploring. But this stupid job thing just gets in the way. Sigh.

Wow, I just realized it’s been quite awhile since I’ve posted a picture from Colorado. It’s sad that I don’t live there anymore, and thus don’t have a steady drip of new pics from the area coming in, but still.
You’re looking at Hahn’s Peak, which is a little ways outside of Steamboat Springs. I was in the area a couple years ago for my wife’s family reuinion, so I got pretty familiar with the view up at this guy, since it pretty much dominates the valley where we were staying. This particular shot was taken from right near the trailhead that takes you up to the top, to that little fire lookout that you can see there. In a nice dose of typical Colorado late-summer weather, it was almost perfectly clear when we started our hike, but a few thunderstorms rolled in soon after we got down off the top. I guess it’s good that we weren’t running any later than we were, you definitely don’t want to be exposed out of the trees during an electrical storm…
In other news, I keep mentioning how disappointed I was in my Tamron 28-300 VC, but yet I keep posting pics from that lens. You may be wondering why that is. I mean, I certainly am. The reality is, that was the only lens I used for basically an entire year, and the non-VC version of that lens was my primary lens for essentially another year before that. So, all of the pictures I took from that timeframe used it. So while it’s true that the quality of most of those pics isn’t quite what I’d like, that’s the only pics I’ve got from then. Also, I’m still in the midst of really going through all of the pictures from then and doing whatever processing I’m going to do. (It’s tough to power through it when so many of the pics that I thought would be fantastic just aren’t because of my equipment, so I end up putting it off, A LOT.) So, even though this is a two year old picture from a lens I didn’t like, I just recently got around to digging it out of the pile. And there are plenty more where this one came from. So I’m sure you’ll continue to see them from time to time. Get comfortable.

Hey everyone! A long time ago (back when my readership consisted of about 10 people (if you counted generously, and included my cat)), I asked what people’s thoughts would be about moving to a 3-post-per-week format, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The response at that time was overwhelmingly in favor of keeping the 5-per-week rhythm (2 out of 2 responses is 100%, right?). But, based on this week’s performance it looks like I’m subconsciously moving in that direction. I’d like to think that next week will be back to normal, but hey, the ice is broken now, right? We’ll see how it goes. 
Before I go any further, I’d like to point out that today I have made it significantly easier to subscribe to the blog to get regular updates. At the bottom of every post (including this one!) there are links to either subscribe to the RSS feed or to receive all of the posts via email. (The email option is brand new, but the RSS feed has actually been around since day 1, but until now it was fairly difficult to find…) So, if you’re currently relying on memory alone to remind you each day to check for a new bite of delicious content, now you no longer have to! Wow! Just go meandering on down to just below the Notes, and click away!

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted a fall colors pic (has it? I actually don’t know, I haven’t been paying attention), so I figure a random Tuesday in June is the perfect time for one. Besides, with the crappy spring we’ve had up here in Seattle, it feels like fall anyway. I mean, seriously, I’m sick of temps in the 50s, I’m ready for some effing sun. Goddamn.
You’re looking at Ingalls Creek, which is up Highway 97 in Washington State, a little ways north of Blewett Pass. (Basically, on the eastern slope of the central Cascades.) The road (Ingalls Creek Road, appropriately enough) is blocked right at the trailhead for the Ingalls Creek Trail, although there’s a bridge and the road keeps going on the other side. (Although if you follow it up the hill for a bit, you soon run into a landslide that blocked the roadway, that’s probably why it’s blocked. Not sure where the road ends up, but it’s sad that they decided to just go ahead and block it off rather than maintain it, in my opinion anyway.) Why am I telling you all of this? Because I’m trying to get across that this picture was taken on the other side of the bridge, just a couple minutes from the trailhead. That’s all.
Ingalls Creek seems to be a pretty decent trail for checking out fall colors. Most of the surrounding forest is evergreens, but right along the creek there’s a bunch of nice bright yellows. I’ve honestly never gone further than an hour or so up the trail (various reasons, whatever), but the part I’ve seen just nicely meanders along the water. No big views or anything, but some nice wildflowers and fall colors (not at the same time though.) So, go check it out. Or, alternatively, don’t.

Hey everyone! I realize I was kind of poopy this week and only managed to post two pictures. Bah, whatever, reading my blog is a privilege, not a right! That, and yes, I am lame. Maybe next week will be better? Hmm, we’ll see. Probably not Monday, as I’ll be out of town. But maybe Tuesday will be AWESOME. Yes, perhaps. Tuesday has the potential to be AWESOME. It also has the potential to be a lot of other things, as it turns out.
Today’s pic takes us back to Galena Summit in Idaho. It’s a little ways north of Sun Valley, sort of right smack in the middle of the state. The name is a bit weird, ending in the word “summit”, rather than “pass”. But hey, those Idahoans are wacky, they do things their own way. Whatever.
I’ve got to run to catch a plane now, that’s all you get.

Hey folks. Hope you all enjoyed the long weekend, if you live in a place where this last weekend was a long one. This is a picture of Chikamin Peak and Gold Creek. It’s right near Snoqualmie Pass in Washington State. Right on the other side of that row of trees is Gold Creek Pond. There’s a nice little path around the pond, and a cute little picnic area. The story behind it is that, when they were building the interstate (which was not too far behind me), what is now Gold Creek Pond was a huge gravel pit. When construction was complete, they turned it into the cute little picnic area that it is now. How nice of them.
That all being said, I would like this picture a lot more if that little bushy thing at the bottom of the frame wasn’t there. Sigh.

I’m not sure exactly how I feel about pictures like this. I mean, don’t get me wrong, animal pictures are cool and everything. But when you take them at the zoo across the street, they just feel.. somehow less authentic. Like, if you take a picture of some bird that’s in a cage, and then go around saying how awesome you are for getting a picture of that bird, it kind of discounts all the effort *real* bird photographers spend trying to get pictures of birds that are actually outside in the wild. (And believe me, those guys (and girls) don’t eff around. My understanding is that it’s an all-day ordeal tracking those suckers down. And you need some wicked telephoto lenses and such. Once you know even a little bit about those folks do to satisfy their particular obsession, it makes pictures of birds quite a bit more impressive. In my opinion anyway.
Anyway, whatever. It’s a tortoise. And it was a few feet away from me. Because I was at the zoo, standing right next to a couple children who thought I looked funny taking a picture of a tortoise.

Well folks, we made it! One whole year. Holy effing crap, that’s way longer than I expected I’d keep this thing going for. Granted, the vast majority of you weren’t around to see those days, but whatever, you’re here now! (Actually, that’s not even true, most of you – “you” being defined as the set of people who subscribe to my RSS feed or otherwise regularly read the blog – don’t actually read the blog. So you’re not actually here now. But that’s fine, I’m going to count you anyway.) So.. Now that we made it to a year… now what? Hmm, good question. Let’s do some homework: your job (each and every one of you) is to go talk to no fewer than two of your friends, and convince them to become followers of the blog as well. Or, alternatively, explain to them why following the blog would not be in their best interest. The important thing is to have the conversation. And take notes, I want proof! And, you should also click on the Facebook like button down below (well, it’s only there if you’re actually looking at http://picture-of-the-day.com, not if you’re looking at this post in, say, Google Reader, so if that’s the case, click through!!) A few of you did a good job following directions when I first put that thing in there, but then the enthusiasm significantly waned.
As for this picture.. You may recognize it as the image that’s used as my avatar when I post comments, as well as the image that’s used as the favicon for the site (the little picture that shows up on your open browser tabs or in your bookmarks list). Also, it’s used as my profile picture on my Facebook page. It’s not that it’s one of my super-favorite pictures or anything though. The truth is, when I first made my Facebook page a year ago when I was bored, it was one of the first few images I saw, so I just grabbed it and tossed it up there. I figured it actually looked decent enough there, so I just kind of stuck with it. But I never got around to actually posting it until today. (Saying “I just grabbed it” sounds wrong – I did actually take this picture, it’s not like I just grabbed it from some random site on the internet or anything – and by the way, none of you are doing that with my pictures, right??) Occasionally I think about freshening things up a bit, and picking a new image to use for those purposes. But… whatever, it’s fine, it’s good enough, and I’m lazy. So this picture it is.
